RLG DigiNews

Lorcan Dempsey 1 min read

One of the characteristics of the digital library phase has been the emergence of several web-based journals and magazines focusing on the digital turn in libraries and related institutions. Of course, there has been DLib Magazine, and, in the UK, Ariadne. RLG DigiNews has been an important part of this landscape also. Jim Michalko and I wrote the following in a preface to the current issue:

In the last issue you heard from Robin Dale that there would be changes ahead for RLG DigiNews. As you can imagine, we’re very proud of the contribution that RLG DigiNews has made over the last ten years and the important readership it has earned. We’re also very proud of Robin Dale and Nancy Elkington, its patrons and prime movers during its fruitful life. And we’re grateful for the terrific partnership with Cornell University that provided the underpinning motive energy.

The issue in front of you is the last of RLG DigiNews in its current form. As RLG continues to shape its combination with OCLC and create the new Programs and Research division, we are rethinking the publication program that will support our new agenda while providing readers and authors with the kind of vehicle that supports the re-invention of cultural institutions in the research, teaching, and learning process. RLG DigiNews will be an important part of this program. Expect to see it back with a renewed editorial direction. There’s much to do and coordinate but we’ve committed both the talent and the resources to make this happen. Watch for your next RLG DigiNews no later than January, 2008.

Thank you for your support. Let those responsible know that you’re looking forward to the future.

Best regards,

[RLG DigiNews April 15, 2007, Volume 11, Number 1]

We owe huge thanks to Anne Kenney and her colleagues (whom she acknowledges here) for much fine work over many years.
